Oculus Rift Inspires New 3D Webcam (Video)

An amateur engineer from Russia is so impressed by Oculus Rift he was inspired to invent the first ever true 3D webcam. What took so long?
The Georgian inventor, using the web alias “Cyborg Mcloud”, has started a page on Indiegogo looking for funding with videos showing how the new technology works.
It shouldn’t be too hard to get this revolutionary device funded (the goal is $50,000) as the potential for trailblazing applications of this technology are at once obvious and nearly limitless.
At first glance, the equipment looks and is quite simple, using off the shelf parts, all coming together with new software that gives the 3D webcam a decidedly “Johnny 5″ look, the robot from the “Short Circuit” movie franchise.

And, the video showing what a person sees through the Oculus Rift connection, is a little disconcerting. But it doesn’t diminish the impact that such a novel piece of hardware makes on anyone who sees it and can grasp the implications of how this new gadget can change the worlds of teleconferencing and gaming, to name just a few.
The 3D webcam allows the user to “see” the environment of the other person at the end of a web connection, to explore that space like never before and to unshackle the user from the tyranny of the static web camera.
The applications go beyond just business or entertainment, offering health professionals a chance to “examine” a patient who may be hundreds, or even thousands, of miles away.
The future of Skype may be heavily tied up in this new tech as people see the advantages of interacting directly with another over the virtual conference table that this 3D webcam allows to become reality.
It’s hard to believe something this sophisticated has never been invented before.
Get ready for a titanic shift in the way users will experience the web in the future.
